Freedom and Security
Fighting Terrorism and Protecting our Freedom on the Homefront

The recent attacks on our nation have changed our world dramatically and created a new enemy – terrorism. Federal, state and local governments are currently developing laws and police practices to detect and prevent further terrorist attacks. However, there is concern that various civil liberties such as freedom of speech, religion, and association, the right to privacy, due process, and equality are being violated in the name of terrorism prevention.  During this seminar, you will discuss a simulated community called Eagle, New Mexico, where local law enforcement agents have just gathered evidence of a terrorist cell in the community.  You will participate in a mock town hall meeting between the mayor, police department, the school board, and concerned citizens to discuss how to handle this information.

Questions to Consider:

  • What are civil liberties?
  • Can you protect individual civil liberties and prevent terrorism at the same time?
