HEALTH:  Introduction

"Flu" has been plaguing humans since the time of the Greeks. Small outbreaks occur almost every year, but severe flu outbreaks occur infrequently due to occasional mutations. A very severe outbreak occurred in 1918 and is thought to have killed 500,000 people in the United States and 50 million people worldwide.  Avian Influenza is a type of flu which makes many birds ill. This infection can sometimes "jump" to people and when it does it makes them very sick, but is not passed from person to person. The concern is that the current avian influenza might mutate into a form that might cause many deaths and would also be passed from person to person. If this happens, we might be facing another terrible outbreak such as we saw in 1918.
